Strength Training is the Key to a Better You
What is your fitness goal? For most people, it involves looking, feeling, or moving better. Other people are focused on aging well. Some people focus on preparing for a specific event. That could mean anything from fitting into a certain outfit for a wedding, to preparing for an obstacle course race. Regardless of what your specific fitness goal is, strength training will help you achieve that goal.
If your goal is appearance based, strength training is one of the best things you can do to reach that goal. Strength training builds lean muscle. Lean muscle gives the shapely toned, lean, ripped, or fit look that you likely want. Lean muscle makes people look and feel hot. If your appearance based goal involves losing weight, adding lean muscle from strength training will increase your metabolism and help you burn more calories throughout the day. If you want to improve the way you look, start strength training!
If your goal involves aging well, strength training is one of the best things you can do. Sarcopenia is the age related loss of muscle mass and strength. If you visit a nursing home you will likely see many frail looking seniors who have lost some mobility. Sarcopenia may not be the only reason for this, but it is a major contributing factor. The best way to fight sarcopenia is by strength training to build and preserve lean muscle mass. Lifting weights is the equivalent of punching father time in the face. Muscle mass is an indicator of longevity in older adults. And lean muscle mass may help reduce the risk of Alzheimer's disease. Lean muscle mass even helps build a healthy immune system.
Strength is the foundation of all physical qualities. Getting stronger will immediately improve your work capacity and power production.
There are lots of ways to train for strength. If you want to train in a gym with weights, I highly recommend Jim Wendler’s 5/3/1 program. If you want to focus on bodyweight training, the Recommend Routine from reddit is quite popular.
In my experience, the most time efficient way to Strength Training is by training at home with kettlebells. Training at home with kettlebells lets you focus on the minimum effective dose. Most people who lift at the gym with conventional methods spend 60-90 minutes lifting each session. By training with kettlebells at home, you can get incredible results with 90 total minutes of lifting all week. You’ll be surprised just how effective 3 thirty minute training sessions per week can be.
