The Power of Showing Up: Consistency Over Everything
Many factors contribute to fitness success, but most work in combination—like following a solid training program, eating healthy, and getting quality sleep, all adding up to results.
However, there’s one factor that doesn’t just add to the equation—it multiplies everything else: consistency. It's the key that amplifies your efforts and turns progress into lasting transformation.
If you show up day after day, year after year, good things happen.
It's easy to confuse motivation and consistency. Motivation is fickle and can't be trusted. Consistency is showing up regularly regardless of your motivation level.
Consistency is the #1 core value at Premeditated Fitness. So here's how you can build the habit of consistency:
Schedule your workouts. Add them to your calendar with an alarm set to go off an hour before. Treat them like a work meeting. It's scheduled so you have to go.
Follow a training program. Many people, beginners especially, go to the gym without a plan and do what they feel like that day. This is inefficient and makes long-term success difficult. Following a training plan designed for your fitness goal helps with consistency because every training session builds off your previous work. Don't know where to start? See the Strength Training section of Fit for Life or hit reply and let me know if you're having trouble deciding and I'll help.
“Just do the warmup” Daily motivation fluctuates wildly. One trick I've used successfully on low motivation days is telling myself I just have to do the warmup, then I can end training if I want. Good music paired with a quality warmup almost always jump starts daily motivation and I get the whole workout done.
There have been times where I ended training after the warmup while using this trick, but they are few and far between. And even then, guess what? I got the warmup in and that counts for maintaining consistency. Win-win.
Track your workouts and progress. Whether it's pen and paper, digital notes, or a training app, track your workouts. Being able to review your progress over time helps keep you accountable and consistent. Even better, have someone to review progress with. This could be an Accountability partner or a website where you publicly post your workouts.
Train at home. Being able to train at home, and not worry about going to the gym, is a cheat code for staying consistent when you're busy. Don't have any equipment? Check out the Groundwork Workout I've posted on Facebook and Instagram. Add in some regular push-ups and bodyweight squats and you'll be all set.
